Sky Sports release James Maddison update as conflicting claims arrive on Leicester City star

There seems to be some conflicting information going around regarding Newcastle’s ‘new improved bid’ for James Maddison.

Yesterday tea time, Sky Sports claimed that our latest offer for the Leicester City star came in at £50m after our first bid of £40m was rejected.

Keith Downie – Sky’s man in the North-East – now claims that our second bid looks to be more like £40m plus add-ons; and seems ‘unlikely’ to be accepted unless Leicester change their stance or ‘decide they need to sell.’

It was suggested yesterday that the Foxes value Maddison at more like £60m and also want the bulk of that fee to be paid up front, so it seems we’ll have to improve our offer considerably to get the 25-year-old.

We may be managing what remains of our budget in an attempt to sign two attackers, but I can’t see us being successful in this pursuit unless we get closer to Leicester’s asking price. After all, you don’t sign top Premier League players at cut-price fees spread over a few years…

Here’s what Sky’s Keith Downie and Pete Graves have had to say in the last few moments:

  1. Pip is spot on – Grealish was £100m, so Madders isn’t going for as little as £60m, arguably (based on his form last season) he is every bit as good as Grealish!
