Toon chiefs ready to launch £25m bid as Howe turns attention to highly-rated striker – Report

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are set to step up their interest in RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko.

It was revealed last month that his agent was on Tyneside to hold talks with Toon officials, however it’s been well documented that the 19-year-old wonderkid also has admirers at Manchester United and Chelsea.

In light of that, the Echo’s Scott Wilson claims we’re ready to test the water with a £25m bid for the Slovenian. That may fall well short of Salzburg’s rumoured asking price, yet it would be an up-front payment with a series of clauses that could make the final fee much higher.

The Austrian’s are believed to want around £42m for the man dubbed the ‘new Erling Haaland’ due to his rare blend of height – he’s 6ft 4′ – pace and ice-cool finishing in front of goal, so it remains to be seen how they’d react to such a bid.

Sesko bagged 10 goals and seven assists last season and has started this one in style, scoring twice in his first three appearances. He certainly looks a player of huge potential, possessing all the traits of a forward Howe would love to get his hands on.

The same piece also confirms our interest in Valencia winger Goncalo Guedes, although it looks like Wolves may be one step ahead of us after entering advanced talks with the Portuguese international over the weekend.

  1. Honestly, if this is true no wonder Eddie howe feels frustrated. They want (reportedly) 42 million. And the powers that be want him for 25 million. What planet do we live on. Come on, somebody somewhere deemed Chris Wood to be a 25 million pound player. So if Sesko is values at that? Erm no thanks. Its an over inflated market. Put up or shut up.

A very good point when you look at Woody wooden legs for £25 million, we need to be more positive in the market if we think the player or any player fits the mould we are looking for in age, cover for Wilson and potential upgrade etc.
I have said before being in the market for strikers is a totally different ball game to going after defenders and midfielders we will have to cough up Nunez Haaland to name but two.

  3. The problem we’ve got is we are apparently only within £50 million of FFP if that’s true instead of fans coming on in a hissy fit and saying what planet are we on put up or shut up and where supposedly richest club in the world cut them some slack it’s no wonder there trying to structure deals because £50 million ain’t a lot to play with

  4. Darren Bob:
£3million up front for Pope, Taggert £12 million, Botman £35 million up front.
We have offloaded Hendrick, Gayle, Woodman, Clark and a talented midfielder Isaac Hayden to Norwich.
I dare say there will be a few more out the door before the window closes.
    No Hissy fit at all!
Yes we can structure deals as everyone else does and the cash is there even with FFP, hate to say it but tight Ashley did leave us in a sound financial position because he spent very little.

  5. Joseph if the cash is there why haven’t we spent it then or is it the fact not being in Europe is big factor as well or is it like I said if we are within £50 million of FFP and the clubs of players we are trying to sign off want huge amounts upfront it’s no wonder we are hitting a bit of a brick wall so do we change direction and go for players like eg sarr and Dennis from Watford are do what Keegan done put a valuation on a player stick to it and if you have to wait one are two more windows down the line to get them so be it

  6. If we haven’t got the money why are we wasting time looking at players we know we cant afford. Smacks of Ashleys tactics, let the fans think that because their linked in the media, we are actually after them, then on deadline day use the old chesnut — We Couldn’t Get Them Over The Line. Offering £40 million for Maddison if true was an insult and if we keep doing that no club is going to do buisiness with us.

  7. Thing is magpie as fans we haven’t got a clue what’s going on behind the scenes and like you said if true where in for Maddison think we will have to go to 50 million or do we throw dubravka in as well if reports are true Leicester want him plus by all accounts Maddison going to push for the move which could strengthen our hand weather that’s right I simply don’t know and like I said in previous comments if we are close to FFP limit when it comes to players making difference in attacking areas its not a lot to play with so do we put it all into Maddison and try and get a striker on loan are change direction

  8. Darren Bob, not being in Europe is obviously a factor for some targets, and clubs asking inflated prices is another.
Even top clubs in Europe have to splash the cash to get their man, we are in a different position to that because we do not have the strength in depth in our forward line, both St Max and Wilson can almost be guaranteed to miss a chunk of the season with injuries so it should have been a priority to sign a forward especially losing Gayle, even before Botman great addition as he is.

  9. Like Etikie Joseph as being perfect example we actually bid more than PSG bur his preference was to go there and that’s the problem facing us and if you want to upgrade on Wilson your talking mega money and them strikers want champions league football so the strikers you could sign are no better than Wilson so that’s why IMO we seem to be targeting up and coming younger strikers that can be long term successor to Wilson but time will tell if I’m right are wrong there
