Sky Sports: Toon target agrees £25m move to former club – Another one bites the dust?

The weekend before last, The Mirror released a bold exclusive on Timo Werner, claiming Newcastle United were in ‘advanced negotiations’ to sign the Chelsea forward on loan.

A week later, it seems like that move won’t be happening, as Sky Sports have just announced that former club RB Leipzig have struck a £25m deal for the German international.

The Mirror reported that he may favour a move to Tyneside over a return to Germany in a bid to prove himself in England, however it looks like he will be returning to the Bundesliga after a tough few seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports report that Juventus were also keen, but the player opted for a move back home to ‘get in shape’ ahead of the World Cup later this year.

With The Telegraph also confirming our interest in Werner, news of his impending move to RB Leipzig may be another mini blow in Eddie Howe’s search for attacking arrivals. Perhaps we preferred a loan or were reluctant to pay a big chunk of his £270,000 wages? Or perhaps we were never actually THAT keen. Who knows.

There is still over three weeks left to do business, but with a striker and right-winger wanted before the window slams shut on September 1st, it would be great to see us make progress before Saturday’s trip to Brighton.
