Castore kits rejected by Premier League as NUFC are forced to wear ‘one-off’ shirt vs Brighton

Newcastle have explained why they’ll be wearing a ‘one-off’ kit that features the Tyneside skyline for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brighton.

Ordinarily, this shirt would be worn during the warm-up on a matchday, but this weekend it will have both advertisements of FUN88 and Noon as well as the Premier League branding on the sleeve.

As stated by the club, the Premier League have ruled that all of our current Castore kits would ‘clash too closely’ with Brighton’s blue and white stripes, meaning an unprecedented ‘special’ shirt must be worn instead.

Here’s a snippet from the club’s official statement confirming this (via NUFC.co.uk):

The Premier League has ruled that the Magpies’ three new 2022/23 Castore kits – black and white, navy blue and white respectively – will all clash too closely with Brighton’s blue-and-white-striped home kit.

Wearing our classic home shirt would mean stripes vs stripes, our dark blue away kit would blend in with the blue and yellow on Brighton’s jersey and our white third kit would clash with the white shorts, stripes and socks worn by Graham Potter’s side.

The shirt set to be worn this weekend is largely a pale blue colour (see below) – which is rather ironic given the kits deemed incompatible by the Premier League – but features silhouette’s of some iconic landmarks of the city such as St James’ Park and the Tyne Bridge.

It has also been announced that the warm-up top will soon be available to purchase online – so good news for those who are already eager to buy their own, but another own goal from our new kit suppliers, who have received criticism from fans over the past 12 months for late deliveries and faulty items.

So far, the opinion from fans on social media seems to be overwhelmingly positive, not that this looks particularly good on Castore’s part!

  1. Wow, you’re really trying to force a negative angle there aren’t you? It’s literally the only team we’ll have this issue with this season, and one Castore would have had no insight to or foresight of when they designed all three kits a long time before Brighton’s or anyone else’s kits were made public. Take the needlessly negative critique down a notch eh?

Castore have been poor in so many departments since they arrived – faulty items, deliveries taking a long time and now this. It’s unprecedented for a club to wear a warm-up kit for a Premier League game, so they’ve clearly dropped the ball here…

  3. Not really the point is it ? Brighton play in blue or blue and white stripes so it shouldn’t have been too difficult to make 1 of 3 strips not clash ……and then we end up anyway wearing a 4th strip that’s…….blue ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  4. Er, I think the headline should read “Premier League exposed” because in all honesty there is absolutely zero reason why any of our kits would be a problem against Brighton.
Black and white stripes against blue and white stripes would be fine as their kit this year is more of a single stripe effort.

Not the point? The club’s official statement on the ‘one-off’ kit clearly states that it’s being worn because the Premier League have ruled that all of our current kits aren’t suitable. I take your point though – this ‘warm-up’ kit isn’t ideal when it’s pale blue, but clearly the best of a bad bunch…

  6. Since when does Castore have any say in what colours NUFC strips are? It’s the club’s decision to release new kits and decide what colours they are and this info is submitted to the Premier League.

In no way has Castore been a part of this decision process. They simply design the strips using the information they are provided with from the club.

  7. Two questions
How does a white with green trim clash with blue and white stripes?
Why is this being negatively reported in some of the press with a agender against us as Castore using it to make money or their fault?
Yes i know they have been a bit meh at times but this is scraping the barrel by the press.
Please Olly don’t fall into the same trap.

  8. Wasn’t there a problem with a clash with Sheffield Wednesday’s strip when they were in the Premiership & they had to borrow the NUFC 3rd strip at SJP?

  9. @Porkpie

It doesn’t clash but guess what… the strip they are using for a one off on Saturday will be available in the club shop soon !

  10. @mactoon that was always going to be the case and it was announced ages before this, no skulduggery here and people need to stop trying to find one when there isn’t one.

  11. THere seems to be some serious tunneled vision here regarding this issue. Why is everyone blaming Castore for the mess? You are all making it sound like NUFC had nothing to so with this.
Do you somehow believe that Castore just come up with a design and NUFC have no input, or don’t have to approve the design?
The strips will have gone through a design and approval phase with the club giving their input, at which time the club had every opportunity to ensure that there was no clash with other teams gear.

I also find it amusing that this new strip is considered “good news for those eager to buy their own”. If Ashley was still in charge you would be saying this was just another attempt by the owner to grab as much money as possible from the fans.

  12. It’s not a new strip it’s a warm up top that they have had to modify for the players also it’s been said from the moment it was revealed that the original warm up top and not a modified version would be for sale.
Like I said no underhand/shady Ashley like going ons here people need to take their tin foil hats off.
Ok they haven’t been the best for certain things like Olly pointed out but like our shirt sponsor the new owners inherited them from the slug and the only mistake the new owners have done is given the ok to the 3 strips that were put in front of them. I’m sure a mistake they won’t repeat.
