Newcastle launch loan enquiry for England midfielder after Jonjo Shelvey injury – Report

According to 90min, Newcastle have enquired about the possibility of signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan.

90min understand that Chelsea are currently unwilling to let the 22-year-old leave this summer, but with a starting spot not guaranteed, interest has certainly risen amongst a number of clubs, with West Ham and Crystal Palace also keen.

The Epsom-born midfielder has spent the last three seasons out on loan, with his most recent spell at Selhurst Park being the most successful after eight top-flight goals and earned an England call-up.

With an injury to Jonjo Shelvey in pre-season set to keep him out for three months, a loan move for the Blues talent would be ideal for Newcastle – especially if a temporary deal would allow us to add quality without breaking the bank.

Gallagher would add healthy competition for Joe Willock and would certainly be determined to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

At this moment in time, Chelsea remain adamant that the England international will stay at Stamford Bridge, but a lot can happen between now and the end of the window.

  1. While I don’t believe for a minute that there is such a thing as a “Newcastle tax” I do think however, that given our newfound wealth and the fact that many expect us to be challenging for Europe, the top 6 will be loathe to do any kind of loan deal with us this season.
It’s one thing loaning Willock to us when we’re fighting for survival, it’s another thing completely letting us have a rising star to help us try to take your place in Europe!
    Just doesn’t make any sense.
