Howe hints at summer exit for 1 of 3 players as Newcastle prepare to name 25-man squad

Eddie Howe admits he has a ‘difficult’ decision to make as he looks to reluctantly move on one of his four goalkeepers at the club.

New signing Nick Pope has joined fellow shot-stoppers Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie, leaving Howe with a dilemma over which one he will choose to leave out of his 25-man squad.

Dubravka, our current number one and first-choice keeper for the last four years, is unlikely to want to play back-up to the England international and could well request a move away.

However, there is a good chance Darlow will also be hungry for first-team football after showing his ability in the 33 league appearances he made in the last two years while Dubravka was out with a foot injury.

On his tough choice, Howe said: “I don’t know (yet). I don’t want anyone to leave, but I’m well aware that four’s a difficult number to carry. My wish would be to do that, but obviously I’ve got to think of the players as well. We hopefully make the right decision.”

It is very likely that one of the three – not including Pope – will depart the club in the coming weeks, but who Howe decides to keep remains to be seen.

Surely it’s a bit early for that, with almost three weeks of the transfer window remaining?
