EXCLUSIVE: Sources in Portugal “surprised” by bold Newcastle claims as Wolves eye Benfica star

There’s been some big claims surrounding Goncalo Ramos this week, yet it seems talk of an imminent bid from Tyneside may be a tad premature.

Speaking exclusively to NUFC Blog, Football Transfers correspondent Jacque Talbot has offered an update from Portugal on the Benfica striker.

According to his sources, those close to the Lisbon-based club were “surprised” to see the level of noise surrounding a potential move to Newcastle over the past 48 hours.

In fact, it’s thought Wolves were the club he was expected to join should he swap Portugal for the Premier League this summer, suggesting we have top flight competition for the 21-year-old talent.

Talbot insists that Ramos is up for grabs, believing Benfica are eyeing another big-money sale, but rumours of a bid ‘in excess of £25m’ – as per Sky Sports – should be met with caution:

“I have some good contacts in Portugal, who guided me through the Darwin Nunez when they got the mandate to bring him to a Premier League side.

“Benfica don’t see Ramos quite like Nunez, but they want to sell. He’s not a direct replacement for Nunez for their first-team and they can bank a good deal.

“He’s expected to leave, but it was thought that the striker would be making the move to Wolves this summer, should be join a Premier League club.

“My sources in Portugal seemed surprised by the level of noise that’s emerged this week surrounding a possible move to Newcastle.

“As I reported, there’s some question marks around Newcastle ‘preparing a bid’, but he is a talented young forward.

“Newcastle are looking for someone like him, so it’s possible, but the response I got to talk of a bid being imminent was certainly one of surprise.”

So, no denial of our reported interest, but it seems some may have been jumping the gun by suggesting a formal bid was imminent.

  1. Transfer market is closed for Newcastle by the looks of things. In Newcastle United they will say the same famous Line that has been used over the years. We tried to get more singings over the line but it Didn’t Happen. But we are happy with the team we have.

This is a totally different club to the excuse-prone one that ran like a ghost ship under Mike Ashley.

Also, I’m not sure what makes you think the ‘transfer market is closed for Newcastle.’ I am very confident we’ll sign at least one attacker before September 1st. As Eddie Howe said today, we still have time.

    Keep the faith!

  4. Noise for sure. He won’t join Newcastle, only more then 50M pounds would make Benfica think about it. It’s an easy sell next season for 60M. Newcastle not even in UCL… Cheers!
