Bruno Guimaraes makes rare admission after Brighton draw and NUFC star hints at VAR error

Bruno Guimaraes has admitted he wasn’t “even close” to his best in yesterday’s 0-0 draw at Brighton, while striker Callum Wilson has hinted that his disallowed goal should have stood.

Since his arrival in January, the Brazilian has made an outstanding start to life on Tyneside, but he showed real honesty – a rare trait in some modern day footballers – in apologising for his performance at The Amex in what was an off day for the former Lyon star.

However, it was not just the South American who struggled on a hot day on the South Coast, with everyone bar our back five and Miguel Almiron playing well below their best.

After the lacklustre performance, the 24-year-old tweeted:

For very different reasons, Callum Wilson also came away from Brighton unhappy.

On the 14th minute, our number nine was denied his second goal in as many games as he was adjudged to have raised his boot dangerously high whilst flicking the ball over Lewis Dunk – despite not making contact with the player. However, VAR failed to intervene and stuck with the referees initial decision, which Eddie Howe described as “harsh” after the game.

The 30-year-old also took to social media, choosing to post a picture of the ‘foul’ followed by this caption…

If nothing else, at least he was able to see the funny side of the incident and, somehow, we were able to leave the south coast with a point and a clean sheet.

  1. “…..with everyone bar our back five and Miguel Almiron playing well below their best.”
What a bizarre way to say 5 players played below par.

Also – the high boot rule is nothing to do with making contact with the other player. It’s about the potential to cause injury.
Unless you are arguing that his boot was below waist height…..
