Southampton edge ahead of Newcastle in race to seal £25m deal – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Southampton are edging ahead of Newcastle in the race to sign Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

Mike McGrath reports that the Saints look set to back Ralph Hassenhutl with a move for the Portuguese talent, stating that Newcastle are currently prioritising a move for a new right-winger – knowing it’s more realistic to sign a striker who is more willing to develop as Callum Wilson’s understudy.

With Wilson currently our number nine and closing in on a new deal, it’s unlikely that we would be able to persuade such a high-profile young striker to join the club as a back-up option to last season’s top scorer.

Ramos took his tally for the season up to five goals and three assists in just five appearances last night, scoring in Benfica’s 2-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in a Champions League qualifier.

Wolves have also been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, who appears to be receiving interest from a host of Premier League clubs – making our job a lot harder than it was a couple of weeks ago.

A fee of around £25m has been rumoured, with The Athletic also releasing a piece last night confirming that Southampton have held talks with the in-form forward.

  1. Southampton can’t offer European football yet even a small club like them can edge ahead of us in the race for Ramos, why are we not more dynamic in the market?

  2. How do you make a Newcastle article out of a tweet from someone who knows nothing saying Southampton are ‘keen’ – this apparently moves them ahead of Newcastle in the pursuit to sign the lad???!!! – what are we just vaguely interested like???.

IF the Telegraph have managed to make an article out of that – that’s a disgrace!!. Our bloggers should be better than that!!.

Don’t be a sheep and follow their poor journalism – do an article criticising it.

  4. I know we have to be patient in the transfer market but if we are genuinely interested and we can’t convince him to sign for us over Southampton then we have some issues in our transfer team !
