Eddie Howe has already identified No 1 target ahead of the January transfer window – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle United make a fresh push for James Maddison when the transfer window reopens in January.

This comes from the Northern Echo, who report that Eddie Howe wants to bring the Leicester City star to St James’ Park after prioritising a move for an attacking midfielder.

The report states that we submitted two late bids for the 25-year-old last month, with the second – believed to be worth around £40m – rejected by the Foxes as they refused to sell Wesley Fofana (Chelsea) and James Maddison during the same window.

Maddison’s contract at the King Power Stadium is set to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season, meaning he’d be entering the final 18 months of his deal should we re-enter talks in January.

Leicester currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League after one draw and five defeats in their opening six games this season, leaving Brendan Rodger under serious pressure.

Despite their struggles, Maddison has still managed two goals and an assist in five appearances so far, however he cut a frustrating figure during their 5-2 hammering at Brighton on Sunday.

The Telegraph reported over the summer that he was ‘keen’ on a move to St James’ Park, while Leicester are preparing to announce annual losses of £119.5m, so this could well be one to watch in January should we reignite our interest.
