Newcastle United have announced the signing of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius.
The 29-year-old has arrived on a short-term deal until January, which includes an option to extend his stay until the end of the season.
He joins on a free transfer after back-up option Karl Darlow suffered an ankle injury in training that could keep him out until after the World Cup break.
Karius was released by Liverpool at the end of the 2021/22 campaign following recent loan spells at Union Berlin and Besiktas.
He becomes the fifth signing of the season at St James’ Park, coming after summer moves fpr Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.
Here’s official confirmation of his arrival, followed by first words from the player himself and Eddie Howe:
Loris Karius:
“I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision.
“Newcastle have a great coach and play really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I’m excited to work with the coaches and my new teammates.”
Eddie Howe:
“We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.
“He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”
Welcome to the Toon, Loris!
