Amanda Staveley & Mehrdad Ghodoussi interviewed football ‘genius’ for Newcastle role – Report

Not only was Unai Emery close, at one stage, to becoming Steve Bruce’s replacement last November, it seems our new owners also held talks with a very different sporting director to Dan Ashworth soon after the Saudi takeover went through.

According to The Times, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi interviewed Luis Campos last year for the director of football role at St James’ Park.

As we know, we ended up biding our time and bringing Dan Ashworth in from Brighton, however Sky Sports did confirm our interest in Campos soon after the new owners arrived.

The former Real Madrid scout is currently working in an advisory role at PSG, yet The Times claim that the “world-acclaimed football expert” has been targeted by Chelsea, who want him to work as a sporting director alongside the newly appointed Graham Potter.

It’s believed Chelsea will invest heavily once again in January and want Campos – who has a superb record in the transfer market – to front their next recruitment drive following talks with Todd Boehly.
