Premier League set to introduce new offside technology – The Times

According to The Times, the Premier League are set to introduce new semi-automated offside technology as of next season after already being successfully introduced into the Champions League.

Currently, offside lines are drawn manually, but the new system will use tracking technology and artificial intelligence to get to a much quicker conclusion – which will be shown to fans inside stadiums on the big screen.

It was used effectively in the Champions League group stages last week and will also feature at the World Cup in Qatar. After that, all 20 Premier League clubs will vote, although it’s believed the majority of top flight clubs are already impressed with the advancements and view it as a huge improvement on the VAR system that is currently in place.

Nine Premier League teams – all Champions League clubs as well as Arsenal, Man United, Southampton, Brighton and Nottingham Forrest – already have the basic infrastructure in place, making the transition to the new system much easier.

Ultimately, the hope is that the introduction of it will remove any debate over controversial offside decisions as well as giving an almost instantaneous outcome, allowing games to flow and offering greater clarity to fans; whether they’re inside the stadium or sat on their sofas waiting for replays.

Here’s a short clip on how the technology works…
