“Scandal!” – Fans not happy as Newcastle United attacker is handed surprise international call-up

Ryan Fraser has been handed his first call-up to the Scotland squad in almost a year ahead of the upcoming international break – but fans North of the Border aren’t enamoured.

The Newcastle winger had been left out of Steve Clarke’s previous two squads after the player controversially withdrew last November.

He cited a ‘calf injury’ as his reason for withdrawing but was pictured training on Tyneside just days later – a move that did not go down with Clarke or the Tartan Army.

Fraser has been frozen out ever since and wasn’t expected to earn a recall anytime soon, however he’s returned to the fold ahead of Nations League games against Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland later this month.

Here’s what Scotland supporters have had to say on Twitter, with many feeling Fraser has burned his bridges and some even suggesting Elliot Anderson should’ve been called up instead!

Can you confirm whether Ryan Fraser will feign an injury again before training for Newcastle 3 days before one of the games? Or was it a one time thing?

Ryan Fraser should never have been called up again after last time.

Oh aye. Ryan Fraser fancy it again now does he?

Why is Ryan Fraser anywhere near the Scotland team? Turned his back on the country!

Ryan Fraser. Shouldn’t ever pull on a Scotland shirt again. Scandal!

We should be giving Elliott Anderson a run. He’s better then Fraser!

Awaiting Ryan Fraser pulling out. Decent player but we should bin off those who only play for their country when they fancy it!

Get Fraser out of the squad. He will just let us down again.
