Toon target scores in Champions League win – but new season struggles could boost NUFC’s hopes?

After strong links with a summer move to Newcastle United, Moussa Diaby ended up remaining at Bayer Leverkusen.

In the end, it seems we were priced out of a move for the Frenchman, who decided to stay in Germany after helping his secure a place in this year’s UEFA Champions League.

He scored in a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid last night, rounding off the scoring in a big win at the BayArena, however the Bundesliga giants have endured a pretty awful start to the new campaign.

Six games into the league season, they sit second bottom and way off the pace at the top. They’ve also been dumped out of the German cup and lost their opening Champions League group game to Club Brugge last week.

So, while Diaby showed what he’s capable of with a tidy finish against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, his situation is one to watch as we edge closer to the January transfer window.

After all, if his European prospects look non existent by the turn of the year or he misses out on a place at the World Cup as a result of Leverkusen’s huge dip in form, our hopes of bringing the 23-year-old to Tyneside may shoot up.

One to watch, especially after we failed to sign a winger over the final days of the transfer window…
