Lucas Paqueta comments arrive from West Ham fans – Hammers not happy with ex-Toon target?

It’s FAR too early to suggest we ‘dodged a bullet’, but it’s fair to say West Ham fans haven’t been impressed by what they’ve seen so far from Lucas Paqueta.

A host of outlets confirmed our interest in the Brazilian over the summer – even if most of the noise surrounding him came because he was Bruno Guimaraes’ best mate – however he ended up sealing a late move to the London Stadium.

Since sealing a £50m club-record move from Lyon to West Ham, he’s made five appearances for the Irons and – based on what we’ve seen in games and read on social media – he’s not found the switch to English football easy.

Forgetting the fact he’s yet to deliver a goal or an assist, Hammers fans have voiced concerns around him wanting too much time on the ball, feeling he’s looked ‘off the pace’, slow to react and lacking in quality.

Early days, of course, but I watched West Ham’s defeat at Everton and narrow Europa Conference League win over Silkeborg IF last week and thought he was particularly poor in both. Does that mean I’m relieved we didn’t sign him? It’s too early to say, but I’ll be glad we took our time if it means signing James Maddison instead!

Here’s a few comments we picked up from Twitter when searching his name and the West Ham hashtag:

He thinks he’s still in the French league. You don’t get much time on the ball in the Prem!

Paqueta has been off the pace here. Always a second too late to make a challenge or a second too late releasing the ball. He isn’t making up his mind before he gets the ball, he’s trying to when he has it. He won’t get that time.

Paqueta’s body language so far been awful. Early days but doesn’t look suited to the Premier League.

It’s early days, but I’m not liking what I’ve seen from Paqueta. Cumbersome on AND off the ball, lacking in quality and looking a bit lost.

Paqueta looks like a luxury player. Was poor at AC Milan and starred in a poor Lyon team in weak league. I’m worried.

Paqueta was very poor in general. He needs time for sure but there was absolutely nothing creative about that performance. Doesn’t look a £50m player!

  1. “wanting too much time on the ball” and “off the pace” is what many said about Bruno when we signed him, and if we get down off our hero-worshipping high horses just for a minute he still gets mugged now and again a little too close to our goal for comfort.

Maybe Moyes should have sat him on the bench for a few games, like Howe did with Bruno.
