Newcastle striker makes worrying injury admission after being forced off in friendly

Newcastle and New Zealand striker Chris Wood has admitted that it ‘hurt to run and breathe’ after he sustained a rib injury whilst playing in a friendly game against Australia.

The 30-year-old, who was signed for £25m from Burnley back in January, claimed he heard ‘something pop’ in his rib while going in for a collision, forcing him off 32 minutes into Sunday’s game.

Since making the move from Lancashire to the North East, the Kiwi has yet to really impress, scoring just twice in 24 league games with one of them coming from the penalty spot.

But with injuries to the likes of Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin and now Chris Wood, Newcastle are relying on the fitness of Callum Wilson to maintain our forward line – a dangerous game to play.

On the injury, Wood said: “I went in for a collision and something popped in my rib. It hurt to run and breathe so I had to come off.”

Our next fixture away to Fulham is rapidly approaching and, with the squad currently ravaged by injuries, we could certainly do with a victory to boost morale after going winless in our last six despite some dominant performances.
