Howe responds to England rumours after being named new favourite to replace Gareth Southgate

With Graham Potter recently taking the Chelsea job, Eddie Howe has emerged as the new bookies favourite to become the next England manager.

Gareth Southgate has come under pressure in recent weeks, with our dismal displays in recent games against Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League leading many to believe the World Cup in Qatar will be his last major tournament at the helm.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Fulham, Howe was inevitably asked about those rumours linking his name to the job, however his response was a reassuring one.

Although he would “never say never” in the long-term, he rubbished suggestions that he would jump at the opportunity – should it arise – anytime soon, insisting he is fully committed to Newcastle United.

Here’s what he told the press when asked about the England job, starting with some praise for Gareth Southgate:

“Gareth has done an incredible job – I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

“I’d never say never, or say ‘no, it won’t be something I’m interested in’, but in the short term it’s not on my radar.

“It’s all Newcastle and investing on trying to make this team the best I can.“
