Bruno Guimaraes reveals Premier League idol, Saint-Maximin bond & his aims for 2022/23

Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes has revealed that Wayne Rooney was his favourite Premier League player when he was growing up.

The 25-year-old admits Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were the two players in his position who he looked up to, but the “amazing” Wayne Rooney was the man he followed most as a youngster in Brazil, explaining how so many in his homeland had his name on the back of their shirts.

Speaking to the Premier League’s official media channel (watch the clip in full below), Bruno touches on his special relationship with Allan Saint-Maximin; his “first mate” on Tyneside following a January move from Lyon and someone he immediately bonded with, revealing that the pair often communicate in French on the pitch!

Our midfield maestro also talks about how “happy” he is on Tyneside, feeling it’s “just the beginning” of this new project on Tyneside following our superb start to the season – but warns we must “keep it going” if we wish to maintain our loft position in the table.

Bruno also praises the love he receives from Newcastle fans – who make him feel like the “Mayor of the city” and motivate him to “play like a Geordie” after forming a special connection with the Toon Army.

Here’s the interview in full, followed by a few quotes from the man himself:

Bruno on his relationship with fans:

“I’m happy to be here. When you know the fans get behind you play well. When I’m in the streets you feel like the Mayor of the city. What I’m believing here, I’ve never believed this before.

“I want to enjoy it as much as I can and on the pitch, play like a Geordie. I wasn’t born here so it’s nice.

Bruno on his aims for 2022/23:

To finish as high as possible. It’s just the beginning of a new project. I think we’re doing very well and we need to keep it going. Keep it going and in the end we’ll have a look at what we did.”

Bruno on St James’ Park:

“To play at St. James’ Park it’s amazing, the love between me and the fans, I need to keep it going. The Premier League is the most difficult league in the world, so when you play well in this league you can do all the things in the world.
