Former Newcastle striker Ivan Toney is set to face a lengthy ban after a statement from the FA revealed that he has been charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules an alleged 232 times.
With the first breach believed to have come in February 2017, it seems his betting began during his time at St James’ Park, with the striker leaving to join Peterborough the following year.
The Brentford forward has been in scintillating form so far this season with 10 goals and 2 assists in his first 14 games, putting him in contention for the England squad for the World Cup.
However, with these recent allegations, it quickly became clear that a potential call-up would be impossible while the case was being investigated, seeing Callum Wilson beat him to a place in Qatar.
Current Mag Kieran Trippier has also been involved in a similar incident, receiving a seven-game ban for breaching betting rules, but this was for far fewer cases, suggesting Toney could be set for a lengthy ban.
The 26-year-old will be a huge miss for the Bees who have found some decent form to put them in 10th and just three points off a Europa League spot, so they will be hoping to get their star man back as soon as possible.
