World Cup boss reveals Steve Nickson talks – Proof Newcastle United are tracking star striker?

Some very interesting comments have emerged from Canada boss John Herdman, less than a week after we were linked with star striker Jonathan David.

Herdman, a Newcastle fan born in Consett, has revealed that he has had conversations with our head of recruitment Steve Nickson, claiming the club are ‘aware’ of some of the top young talents emerging from Canada.

He also went on to state that some of the players from his national side are ‘on the radar’ of Newcastle and that talks between both he and Nickson had gone on for around two years.

The Chronicle revealed earlier this month that we’d been ‘monitoring’ David – the 22-year-old Lille striker who has started the Ligue 1 season with nine goals and three assists in 15 appearances.

We may be putting two and two together and making five, but Herdman’s comments certainly support the idea Newcastle have been showing real interest in the in-form attacker.

Here’s what he told The Chronicle, confirming a series of “good conversations” with Nickson:

“I’ve had a few good conversations with the head of recruitment over the last two years around some of the Canadian players so they’re on the radar. There’s no doubt.

“We had a good chat about some of the Canadian players. They’re on board, they’re aware, they’re doing their homework. They’re aware of some of those younger guys that are starting to emerge.

With this being Canada’s first World Cup since 1986, the team are currently on the rise. With the likes of David and Alphonso Davies now playing consistent European football, they could be one to watch in Qatar and beyond.
