No, I’m not referring to the fact that our wonderful football media refer to Manchester United merely as United despite there being another one ahead of them in the Premier League.
I mean there’s actually another senior team playing under the banner of Newcastle United and whisper it quietly they are making some noise at the moment which is about to get an awful lot louder.
I refer of course to Newcastle United Women’s Team. A set of coaches, players and supporters that are truly United in the cause to add their weight to the quest to make NUFC the greatest Club in the land.
We all know and adore the fact that Eddie’s Men’s Mags are riding high in The Premiership but did you know that Becky’s Lady Mags are even higher in their division as well as making progress in the FA Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
Becky is of course Becky Langley who is the Head Coach/Manager of the Lasses and able assisted alongside by Lloyd Miller. This pair have guided their side into the second round proper of the Women’s FA Cup and to the top of the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
Like their illustrious colleagues they have a fanatical following. Two gates well over 2,000 at Kingston Park this season, 750 at Whitley Park and 486 last time at Druids Park when they picked up a 1 – 0 win over Barnsley Women.
Those numbers might not seem that impressive but this is the fourth tier of Women’s football and these Lasses are drawing more and more to watch them every single time they turn out. Their away support is also very impressive.
I was one of those that followed them to York City the other week when a 2 – 1 win over their hosts took them to the top of the table. The numbers in the crowd that day supporting The Lady Mags certainly outnumbered the home support.
Last weekend they travelled to Hull City in the FA Cup and won 2 – 1 in extra time. A great win on the road without several first-choice players through injury or unavailability to earn their second-round spot.
That game is a home tie against Barnsley and if you didn’t already know it, it’s going to be played at St. James Park on Sunday 27th November with a 14:00pm kick-off. It promises to be a momentous and historic occasion.
Last year Langley’s Lasses took on Alnwick Town in the League at St. James Park and attracted a phenomenal gate of 22,134. Will the Barnsley cup-tie better that. You better believe it will with estimates of 45,000 tickets already sold. Unbelievable really.
But these Lasses deserve it. They are committed, honest and United in their goals. They also have a lot of talent and ability and I’ve never seen them give less than 100% to the cause. They love it and it can be seen in the way they express themselves on the pitch.
With no Premier League action until December, I strongly suggest you give the Lady Mags a look. You’ll find a team with a togetherness and vibe that sees them all interact not just as players but as people and friends with the coaches, backroom and their ever growing band of supporters.
Plus they’re virtually all local Lasses and Toon fans too!
Manchester United is the King in my mind. They tried their best when playing. So, they deserve respect. I always support them. happy wheels
