Newcastle United has a long and storied history in English football. It was originally founded in 1892, when the two Newcastle-based football clubs, East End and West End, merged into one entity. Over the course of their 130-year old career, the Magpies have done quite well for themselves. They currently play in the top flight of English football, and have never dropped below the second tier since joining the Football League, a year after their formation.
During the 2021/22 Newcastle did not do too well for themselves. While they were not ranked among the bottom, they didn’t break through to the top 10, finishing the season with a rank of 11th overall. However, it seems that this time around, they have learned from their past mistakes.
Currently, Newcastle United sits at the number 3 spot, having won 8 out of the 15 games which they have played. They are ranked higher than some of England’s best-known clubs, like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham. Due to their success, enthusiasts of sports betting online have noticed that Newcastle’s odds have gone up quite a bit in the past few months since the Premier League began. So, to honor the Magpies, we thought we would go over their track record during the first 15 matches of the season. Let us take a look at how they’ve done for themselves.
The Wins!
Starting the season off right, Newcastle United won their first match against Nottingham Forest with a score of 2 – 0. The match took place on 6 August, and served almost as a precursor to the success that the Magpies would enjoy this season.
Sadly, the success would not be immediate. In the following six matches, Newcastle could not pull a single win. Five of the matches ended up being ties, and their 31 August game against Liverpool, though exciting, ended in favor of the Reds.
This streak of bad luck continued all the way until 1 October, when the Mags went up against Fulham. The game was not much of a nail-biter. After all, Once Newcastle scored their 4th goal, it was obvious that the opposing team would not be catching up.
Since their victory against Fulham, Newcastle has played 7 other matches, out of which they have won 6, and tied 1 against England’s most popular club, Manchester United, who have recently been having some internal drama.
Newcastle’s latest match happened on 12 November. In it they went head-to-head with Chelsea. While the Blues are one of England’s most successful clubs, they have not been having the best time in the 2022/23 season. The match ended in a 1 – 0 victory in favor of the Magpies, increasing their standing and ranking in the overall Premier League.
And while Newcastle has been having a great season, it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows. So, in the following section, we are going to take a look at a few games in which the Magpies could have done a much better job than they did.
Loss & Ties
As we said before, Newcastle experienced a major loss in their fifth game of the season. Their game against Liverpool resulted in a score of 2 – 1. However, it wasn’t all bad. The game was a close call after all, and the Magpies gave it their all. Thus far, it is the only loss they have taken in the Premier League, and if they can keep on with a record of 1 loss every 16 games, then they are off to a good start.
The problem isn’t so much this loss, but rather the 6 ties. Some of the draws are understandable. Going against Manchester United is pressure enough. During the game, both teams’ defense was on point, which might be the reason the game ended in a score of 0 – 0. The same could be said for their game against Manchester City, which happened much earlier in the season. It ended in a score of 3 – 3, so both clubs had a lot to be happy about.
However, fans of the Magpies will be hard-pressed to justify the ties against the Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are currently ranked at the very bottom of the Premier League. The Wanderers have been having an overall bad season, with only 2 wins under their belt. So, this loss is quite a stain on an otherwise excellent record for the Magpies.
