Guimaraes makes mockery of Man Utd flop as superb stats emerge from World Cup debut

Bruno Guimaraes made a mockery of Tite’s decision to start Fred ahead of him last night’s 1-0 win over Switzerland, doing more in half an hour than the Man Utd midfielder did in 60 minutes.

In just 32 minutes, the 25-year-old completed more attacking third passes (4), more take-ons (1/1), won more ground duels (2/3) and won more aerial duels (1/1) than Fred.

Incredibly, he managed just FIVE less touches (29) than his South American compatriot, despite the fact he was on the field for half as long.

Bruno has clearly given Tite something to think about and would be extremely unlucky not to feature in the later stages of the tournament after the win secured Brazil’s place in the last 16. In fact, now the favourites have qualified for the last 16, you’d expect him to start in their final group game against Cameroon later this week.

As Newcastle fans, we all hope that Bruno gets the chance to represent his country in the starting lineup – providing he comes back fit, ready and raring to go when our World Cup stars return next month!

  1. This obsession with worthless stats is becoming quite scary.
For stats to be of any value it has to be apples and apples.
I once saved 4 penalties in a shootout. Does that make me better than Pope?
No, because Pope plays in the Prem and I was playing against Kielder and Falstone combined primary school.
Were there duels against the same people?
Did their passes cover the same ground?
Were they taking on the same people?
I remember when Tiote played for us and McLaren tried to turn him into a holding midfielder, instead of the Dark Destroyer we all loved. Tiote’s stats were phenomenal. More touches than any other midfielder on the league.
That was because he took 4 or 5 touches every time he got the ball, to do what other midfielders could do it in 2.
Not one of those stats actually means anything.

I’m not really understanding your point. Fred played 60 minutes and Bruno played 30 in the EXACT same game, so his stats in comparison are relevant…
