Player set to be axed just three months on from Newcastle exit due to fitness issues – Report

Former Toon defender Federico Fernandez could have his contract with Elche scrapped just three months after he signed for the club, according to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo.

Fernandez had been at Newcastle for four years, making 89 appearances, but left to join the La Liga side on deadline day after moves for Sven Botman and Dan Burn saw him slip down the pecking order on Tyneside.

Despite signing a one-year-deal with the Spanish side in September, Elche are already negotiating an early release for the 33-year-old – who’s made just one appearance all season and has missed out on their squad in each of the last six league games.

It’s reported that poor fitness is the reason for letting the Argentinian go – something he struggled with during his final season on Tyneside when he made just seven Premier League appearances, failing to feature once between December and May.

Should he be moved on, Fernandez will soon be on the lookout for his next move no sooner had he arrived in Spain. Perhaps a return to his homeland could be on the cards, unless fitness issues could force the defender into an early retirement?
