Sources close to Newcastle brief local journalist on January transfer plans – Good & bad news?

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has issued an update on our January transfer plans following conversations with ‘well placed sources’ at Newcastle United.

First off, he’s been told that the club are “highly unlikely” to make a move for James Maddison this winter, insisting it would be ‘very, very expensive’ and a ‘difficult to do’ midway through the season.

However, Edwards insists that Newcastle remain keen and are still a big fan of the player, suggesting a fresh move could be on the cards next summer; where he’d be entering the final 12 months of his contract at Leicester City.

It’s believed signings are still on the agenda in January – West Ham’s Harrison Ashby and Velez Sarsfield’s Maximo Perrone have been heavily linked – but it’s not expected to be a ‘huge month’ on the recruitment front.

Personally, I’d love to see us make a third bid for Maddison while we’re in a position of strength, as a player of his calibre and Premier League know-how could be the difference between breaking the top four or falling short.

Here’s Edwards’ transfer update on Twitter:

Who knows. Things can change in football – it was believed we’d pulled out of the Isak deal a few weeks before he ended up signing at St James’ Park! Let’s see what January brings.
