Talks underway to see Newcastle United host World title fight at St James’ Park in 2023

Boxing star Savannah Marshall has confirmed that talks are now underway with Claressa Shields’ camp about a World title rematch at St James’ Park next summer.

Marshall – who watched Newcastle United Women beat Barnsley in front of a crowd of almost 30,000 last weekend – lost the first fight to the undefeated American back in October, however it’s been revealed that a rematch clause exists in the contract.

Sky Sports are “pushing” to make it happen and talks are underway with Newcastle United; who were due to host the first fight until a clash of dates saw it take place at London’s O2 Arena instead.

With the club now committed to supporting female sport, highlighted by their ambitious plans for our Women’s team, Marshall believes it would be “absolutely massive” if St James’ Park could play host for the eagerly anticipated rematch.

Here’s what Marshall – an avid Toon fan – has had to say, confirming talks are underway:

“I’ve got the rematch. I have got the rematch (clause), and that’s something that Sky are really pushing.

“There’s talks of it happening at St James’ Park next summer, so that’s something to really look forward to.

“It would mean the world to me to have a fight like that at St James’, especially because they were meant to have the first fight at St James’, but just because of the dates, it didn’t happen.

“With the way that Newcastle United are getting behind female sport and their women’s football team, I think it would be absolutely massive.”
