Toon set to launch January bid for Portuguese talent after issues with new manager – Report

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Newcastle ‘intend to return’ with a new offer for summer target Roger Fernandes; the SC Braga wonderkid whose valuation has dropped in recent months.

Newcastle, along with Atletico Madrid and Ajax, had looked at signing the highly-rated winger in the summer, but struggled to form a deal with Braga president Antonio Salvador.

It was believed that the 17-year-old’s stock would have risen dramatically by now, but after new manager Artur Jorge sent his young star to train with the B team, it’s thought a ‘lower offer’ may now be acceptable.

Fernandes made seven appearances in the Primeira Liga last season, featuring in their Europa League campaign and becoming the youngest player (15) to ever play in the Portuguese top flight, but he’s been demoted to their B team since Carlos Carvalhal’s exit a few months ago.

Given the amount of summer links and the emphasis Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe have places on recruiting exciting young talent, a cut-price move for the talented youngster could make plenty of sense.
