Garang Kuol involved in late drama as Aussie makes more World Cup history vs Argentina – Video

Garang Kuol became the first Newcastle United representative to bow out of the 2022 World Cup last night, but it could’ve been very different for the Toon-bound teenager.

After replacing Mathew Leckie in the 71st minute of Australia’s last 16 clash with Argentina, his side pulled one back through an Enzo Fernandez own goal just six minutes after his introduction.

Then his big moment arrived in the last kick of the game. He spun Nicolás Tagliafico superbly, worked the ball onto his right foot and smashed a low shot towards goal, only for Aston Villa stopper Emiliano Martinez to smother his 97th minute effort.

The referee’s whistle went moments later, sending Argentina into the quarter finals and dumping the Aussie’s out, but it was a promising cameo and incredible experience for the 18-year-old talent – who became the youngest player to play in the knockout stages of the World Cup since Pelé in 1958 (17 years, 249 days)
