Richard Keys reacts to Eddie Howe calls as fresh doubts emerge on Southgate’s England future

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has claimed that the England job is ‘not a step up’ for Eddie Howe after England’s World Cup exit has sparked debate around Gareth Southgate’s future.

England’s defeat to France in the quarter-finals has again brought up the question of who could replace Southgate, with many wondering if he’ll walk away based on his latest comments.

Many have been calling for Eddie Howe or Graham Potter to step in, however, with both taking on huge new roles in the last 12 months, it is unlikely that they would drop their projects for such a difficult job.

Keys believes Howe ‘won’t be going anywhere’. Instead, the 65-year-old suggested exploring the foreign market for a new manager, with Arsene Wenger being top of his list of priorities.

Here’s what he had to say on:

“It (taking the England job) is not a step up for Eddie Howe.

He won’t be going anywhere (and will be staying at Newcastle United).

I would have as broad a field as I possibly could.

“Our domestic league is dominated by foreign coaches. So I would think perhaps it is time to go back to that formula.

What’s Arsene Wenger doing? Why not?”

For once it’s difficult to disagree with Keys – Howe has a team that is on the up, will only get better and has a very bright future – there is no reason to give that all up for what feels like a cursed job.
