Shock exit boosts NUFC’s cup hopes as club learn possible opponents ahead of Man City vs Liverpool

The quarter final line up in the Carabao Cup is beginning to take shape, although one side who will not be in the last eight are Brighton.

The 7th place Seagulls crashed out on penalties to Charlton night, creating the shock of the round given the struggling League One side have failed to win any of their last eight games, leaving them 18th in the third tier.

This can only be seen as good news for Newcastle, as a dangerous Brighton side could’ve caused us problems, being the highest placed Premier League side who were still in the tournament behind ourselves, Man Utd, Man City/Liverpool.

Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham Forest (the current bottom three in the Premier League) remain in the running, with Leicester City also through after they too beat lower league opposition.

The quarter final draw will take places on Sky Sports after tonight’s final last 16 tie between Man City and Liverpool, with those fixtures set to take pace the week commencing 9 January 2023.

Here’s the seven potential ties awaiting Eddie Howe’s Mags, followed by all of the last 16 results so far:

  1. Man City / Liverpool
  2. Man Utd
  3. Leicester City
  4. Nottingham Forest
  5. Southampton
  6. Wolves
  7. Charlton
