Dan Ashworth shortlists FOUR midfielders as fresh doubts emerge on Jonjo Shelvey’s future – Report

As revealed by The Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle are looking at Jorginho, Youri Tielemans, Khephren Thuram and Kouadio Kone after a recent revelation on Jonjo Shelvey’s contract situation.

The 30-year-old will be granted a one-year extension should he start just two more games in the league, but after a calf injury that could keep him out for eight weeks, his future at Newcastle looks in doubt.

All four are believed to have been shortlisted by the club’s recruitment team, with Dan Ashworth and Steve Nickson upping our search for another midfielder following Shelvey’s latest injury setback.

Jorginho is one of the top targets for Dan Ashworth with the 31-year-old having just six months left on his current deal with Chelsea, so a free transfer could be on the cards.

Leicester’s Tielemans is also an option, with the Belgian looking for a way out of the East Midlands as he approaches the final six months of his contract. He was tipped to arrive on Tyneside over the final few days of the summer window, but ended up remaining with the Foxes.

Alternatively, Nice’s Thuram and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Kone – both 21-years-old and playing for France U-21s – are thought to be well liked by our scouting department.
