Howe reveals type of player who could replace Chris Wood as Toon boss confirms transfer plans

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Chris Wood is having a medical at Nottingham Forest ‘as we speak’, admitting that the offer – a loan with a £15m obligation to buy – was a ‘very good deal financially’ for the club.

Speaking to the press this morning, talked up the need to replace the 31-year-old over the final week and a half of the window, stressing that we’d be left ‘dangerously short’ should we fail to sign another forward.

That said, Howe revealed that his likely replacement may be of a different profile, believing players like Wood – a big, experienced, target man – aren’t widely available in the market. He also stressed that they need to be “ready to play now” – a hint that he’ll look at Premier League proven options?

The Telegraph revealed yesterday that the manager was happy to sign a versatile forward able to play up top or out wide, which seems very possible based on Howe’s comments.

When asked for an update on the deal itself, the 45-year-old said:

“Chris is having a medical with Forest as we speak, so that’s the situation.

“When we signed him we were in a very difficult league position. He played a huge part on the pitch and helped transform the team. Then this season he has been excellent on and off the pitch when he’s not played.

“We can’t underestimate the role has played. It was a difficult decision because you have to take into account the player and his wishes. But also I think it’s a very good deal financially for the football club.

Howe when asked about his plans to replace Wood:

“We are hopefully planning to replace him. Certainly from my side there was no thought of letting a player go and not replacing him.

“The last thing I wanted to do was leave ourselves light of players…it’s an important time.

“That would leave us dangerously short but there’s no guarantees, so that’s the position we are in.

“We need a strong squad for what’s to come.”

“I don’t think we will replace Chris with another Chris if that makes sense. His type of player I don’t necessarily think is in the market…it’s got to be the right player. That’s always so important.

“We have targets who we’ll pursue. We’ll wait and see how they go.

“In forward areas you want a player that can excite the fans. They are the hardest to recruit, but that’s our task. And being ready to play now is important.”
