Newcastle United have finally struck a deal for Anthony Gordon – but it remains to be seen exactly how much and for how long we’ll be paying for the winger.
Since Sky Sports announced that it would be a £40m fee plus £5m in potential add-ons, conflicting claims have arrived from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards and The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Here’s what both have said to their followers on Twitter:
David Ornstein (Athletic) – ‘Anthony Gordon move from Everton to Newcastle will see #NUFC pay £40m in a single payment. Vital given #EFC financial situation & ability to recruit before deadline. Also, 21yo was required to submit transfer request for deal to be agreed.‘
Luke Edwards (Telegraph): – ‘Important to stress that it is £40m maximum too. I don’t think they have paid this up front either. It’ll be one of those staggered and structured payment plans.’
Two well-known journalists, two completely opposing updates.
Ornstein reckons it’s £40m up front as one single payment, Edwards insists it’s going to be staggered, suggesting we’ll pay a portion of the fee across several years.
Hopefully it’s the latter, as that would only help our bid to overcome FFP restrictions and boost the money available to Eddie Howe over the summer.
