EXCLUSIVE: Dan Ashworth wonderkid arrives in England ahead of Toon trial

Jamaican wonderkid Dujuan Richards has arrived in England ahead of a trial period at Newcastle United, which is set to begin on 6th February.

The 17-year-old comes from the same Phoenix Academy as Aston Villa star Leon Bailey and could become the latest teenage sensation to sign, should he impress.

We understand it will be a two-week trial, starting on Monday 6th February, with the 6ft 2′ striker expected to train with our Under-21s; who are now being led by Ben Dawson following his appointment on Thursday.

Richards, frequently referred to as ‘Whisper’, currently plays for Kingston College and Phoenix Academy in his native Jamaica, where he recently bagged an outstanding 29 goals and 19 assists in the Manning Cup; a local schoolboy tournament.

The highly-rated youngster jetted to England from Sangster International Airport last night and touched down in Heathrow this morning, but won’t link up with Newcastle United until a week on Monday.

The Jamaica Observer first reported news of our interest last week and it’s our understanding the trial period will begin on February 6th. The Under-21s face Leeds United on February 13th, although it remains to be seen if he’ll feature in that Premier League 2 fixture.

With Dan Ashworth leading our search for exciting young talents following Garang Kuol’s arrival from Australia earlier this month, it seems Richards is the latest one to watch on Tyneside.

Let’s hope he impresses and earns himself a contract at the club over the coming weeks.
