Sky: Newcastle hijack £20m talks with ‘loan-to-buy’ bid and Chelsea midfielder still on radar

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United have launched a ‘loan-to-buy’ bid for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.

As revealed by Keith Downie, the club are attempting to beat Fulham to a deal for the 6ft 5′ Norwegian, with the Cottagers currently in talks over a £20m permanent deal.

It’s believed the Blades would prefer an immediate sale, however, it’s thought our offer contains an obligation to buy at the end of the season, suggesting the selling side would be guaranteed to receive a fee this summer.

The 24-year-old was left out of their FA Cup clash at Wrexham last night and could be on the move, with Fulham currently deemed the front-runners for his signature based on Sheffield United’s preference for an immediate cash boost.

Downie also reports that Conor Gallagher remains of interest, although Chelsea are reluctant to let the midfielder go and the player is also keen to prove himself at Stamford Bridge, making Berge a ‘more likely option.’

This comes after news of Jonjo Shelvey’s imminent move to Nottingham Forest was announced last night, leaving Eddie Howe scouring the loan market for a late replacement.

  1. Selling the Blades fans short. Why would you sell your best player in the middle of a promotion run?
Poor management strategy and the reason the blades will always be second class.
