Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle to launch new bid for ‘top target’ with two other deals prioritised

In his latest Toon transfer update, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle will target a left-back, a new winger and a creative midfielder this summer, with a fresh move for James Maddison imminent.

The Foxes had rejected multiple bids for the midfielder in the summer, hoping to get close to £60m for his services, but Romano is ‘sure’ that Newcastle will try again in the coming months.

We have been in the market for an attacking midfielder for some time now, but the goals from Miguel Almiron had somewhat disguised our lack of depth, meaning we failed to really address that issue in January.

But there is now hope that our owners recognise the situation and are already planning to bring in a number of top players to close the gap in quality between us and those at the top.

It’s unclear whether we will have to battle other clubs for his signature – Man City had previously shown an interest in the 26-year-old – but Newcastle clearly remain big fans of his.

Speaking on the House of Champions Podcast, Romano had this to say:

“I expect a new left-back to join the club – this is one of the priorities they’ll have in the summer. Also a new winger – they explored this market a few months ago – then a creative midfielder.

“There is a player they really love who is James Maddison who is doing very well with Leicester. He is a player they always had on top of their list and I am sure they will try again before the summer.

“I don’t know how much competition there will be because this kind of player is always on the list of big clubs, but Newcastle will be there.

“They will be busy in the summer. They will always be with the same strategy – not wasting money but trusting the right players for the present and future.”
