It’s been a tough few years for ex-Newcastle captain Scott Parker – and it has just got worse.
After poor results in the Premier League saw him lose jobs at Bournemouth and Fulham over the past two seasons, the 42-year-old tried his luck abroad by taking the Club Brugge job in December.
Since then, the Belgian giants have won just two of their opening 12 games under the former Toon midfielder, but things turned even uglier last night as they were battered 5-1 by Benfica in the Champions League knockout stages.
Goncalo Ramos – the Portuguese striker we bid for last summer – scored a brace Estádio da Luz, while recently linked left-back Álex Grimaldo also delivered another impressive display, bagging his 11th assist of the season to seal a 7-1 aggregate win that has ultimately cost Parker his job.
With a 16.7% win percentage, he’s been relieved of his duties on Wednesday afternoon after just 67 days in charge, with leading Belgian outlet HLN describing Parker as a ‘complete flop’ who has ‘made a mess of the job’.
Watch his reaction to last night’s heavy defeat below in what proved to be his final press conference in charge:
