Callum Wilson sends message to his critics ahead of huge Wolves clash

Toon striker Callum Wilson has admitted he is ‘partly to blame’ for Newcastle’s poor form in front of goal and has vowed to ‘keep believing’ in himself and use the negativity as ‘motivation’ moving forwards.

We face Wolves tomorrow in a huge game for both sides for two different reasons – Newcastle to keep the pressure on top four and Wolves to push themselves further away from the bottom three.

The Magpies have been struggling for goals since the turn of the year, scoring just three goals in our last eight Premier League games. Although we’ve created a lot of chances, we have to start putting them away and turn draws into victories.

Wilson, who has very much struggled since his return from the World Cup with just one goal in his last 12, has acknowledged that he needs to ‘fix up in front of goal’, also bemoaning the amount of big chances we’ve missed as a team.

Despite the ‘noise and negativity’, our No 9 is still backing himself to come good, refusing to let any ‘self-doubt creep in’ after a dry spell in front of goal.

Speaking on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson had this to say:

“We had chances (against Manchester City) but it’s the same again each week. We keep saying ‘we had chances, we had chances.’

“I’m obviously partly to blame for that because I’m a striker and I take responsibility. Full responsibility. I never shy away from owning up and taking accountability. I need to fix up in front of goal. You’re never going to go through a season of missing chances because, when you’re a goalscorer, you score goals no matter what.

“You just have to keep believing in yourself and don’t let any self-doubt creep in. Let everybody from the outside do their talking. I hear there’s a lot of noise and negativity and stuff but you’ve got to use that as motivation. Let people do their talking and you do your talking on a pitch.”
