As reported by Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport, Newcastle are in ‘pole position’ to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram on a free transfer.
With a contract expiring in the summer, the Frenchman has made it clear that he will be leaving the Bundesliga club for free with a number of European clubs chasing his signature.
The versatile forward can play up front or out wide and was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park in January, with Allan Saint-Maximin publicly encouraging the club to pursue the 25-year-old.
It’s thought Inter Milan are also keen on Thuram, offering a ‘multi-year contract worth €5m per season’ after meeting with his representatives. However, the report states that Newcastle can offer the World Cup finalist a superior package, thought it’s not yet clear if we’ve submitted a concrete proposal.
As with any rumour at this time of year, it’s best taken with a pinch of salt for now. That being said, Thuram does tick several boxes as a versatile, in-form forward available on the cheap and has been tipped to arrive on Tyneside for a few seasons now.
Despite the major interest, Thuram isn’t expected to make his final decision until April at the earliest, but he is certainly one to watch – especially when bargain deals like this could be key in our battle to sign quality players without breaking the bank.
he is a seriously good player, we need to get him in – a great addition to the squad if he comes to us.
