Howe’s telling summer transfer admission during Sky Sports interview – Video

Speaking to Sky Sports, Eddie Howe has warned that the summer transfer window will be a ‘difficult’ period due to our recent spending; which ‘cannot continue’ unless commercial deals boost our budget.

Just three months after the takeover was confirmed, Newcastle were effectively forced to spend over £100m in the January window to simply ensure our Premier League status for the following season.

Once our safety was confirmed, planning for the summer of 2022 began where we spent another £120m before adding Anthony Gordon for roughly around £40m.

This spending has clearly had a huge impact on what will be available to us in the coming months, unless we can agree some very lucrative commercial deals to increase funds.

While Howe is ‘hopeful’ that this will improve in time, fans have been warned not expect an array of lavish signings while we continue to work under a number of ‘restrictions’. However, the 45-year-old is confident in his abilities to work well under these difficult circumstances given his track record of dealing with transfer embargo’s and limits and will have ‘no problem adapting’

See the snippet on summer spending below with Sky Sports’ Keith Downie:

FFP is clearly an obstacle, but it’s also important we get the message out there that we don’t have an endless pit of cash; something that lead to a ‘Newcastle tax’ since Saudi investment arrived at St James’ Park.

  1. Surely the fact that we finished a full 15 points above the relegation zone clearly shows that we were not “forced to spend over £100m ….to simply ensure our Premier League status for the following season.”

What do you think would have happened if it hadn’t been spent? – we only started winning games under Howe once the new players came in
