Brazilian back on Newcastle’s radar after coming ‘close’ to move last summer – The Athletic

According to The Athletic, Newcastle remain interested in bringing Watford’s Joao Pedro to St James’ Park – but could face competition from AC Milan for his signature.

The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move Tyneside last summer, with Fabrizio Romano announcing at one stage that a deal worth £30m had been agreed between the two clubs.

Although a series of bids were lodged and a move ‘close’, talk of an agreement proved premature, as the Hornets ended up keeping the 21-year-old at Vicarage Road and securing him on a new long-term deal until 2028.

Several months later, Adam Leventhal – The Athletic’s correspondent for all things Watford – has revealed today that he remains a player we’re watching closely and does feature on our list of potential targets, although it’s not yet clear if he’ll be a priority target. AC Milan are also big admirers, however, and could provide competition.

If Watford seal promotion back to the Premier League – they are currently five points shy of the top six – then Gino Pozzo will push to keep the South American for another season, but there’s an acceptance he will need to be sold to balance the book if they fail to bounce back.

Pedro has bagged nine goals and two assists this season, can play anywhere across the front and is clearly a player of real interest at Newcastle. Another one to watch this summer?
