Newcastle set to take part in PL tournament and first pre-season friendly of 2023 confirmed

Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe’s Mags will travel to Rangers for a pre-season friendly on July 18th (7.45pm kick-off), with a tournament in the USA also on the cards later that month.

The game at Ibrox will be a testimonial match for Allan McGregor, who is closing in on his 550th cap for the Scottish giants and set to retire at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Howe believes the game will be a “strong challenge” at an “important time” in our summer preparations, as he expects a “competitive” game against the SPL side.

Official confirmation is yet to arrive, but Newcastle are expected to take part in a round-robin tournament on the East Coast of America at the end of July, featuring friendlies against three other Premier League sides. Chelsea, Brighton and Leeds are rumoured to be involved.

For now, here’s full details of our trip to Scotland on July 18th, via NUFC.co.uk:

Newcastle United will travel to Ibrox Stadium for a pre-season friendly fixture with Rangers this summer as part of preparations for the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Eddie Howe’s squad will make the journey to Glasgow on Tuesday, 18th July (kick-off 7:45pm) to take part in a testimonial match in honour of Light Blues goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who – if selected this weekend – could make his 500th appearance for the Scottish Premiership side.

The fixture is the Magpies’ first confirmed outing of pre-season, with further matches to be confirmed in the coming months.

Eddie Howe said: “A trip to Rangers will present a strong challenge at what will be an important time in our summer preparations.

“Any time Rangers play at Ibrox, you expect competitive football, and we hope to contribute to a great occasion in honour of Allan McGregor’s achievements with the club.”
