Newcastle United are considering a summer move for Everton star Amadou Onana.
Speaking exclusively to NUFC Blog, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that we showed interest in the giant midfielder back in January, but he decided not to jump ship in the middle of their relegation battle.
However, it’s Tavolieri’s understanding that we could firm up our interest at the end of the season, believing the player himself “loves the project” on offer at St James’ Park.
Onana played alongside Sven Botman during his time at Lille and ticks several boxes for this new-look Newcastle, being a box-to-box midfielder with big potential – he’s still only 21 – and impressive mobility and power to go alongside his 6ft 4′ frame.
It’s well documented that we’re looking to strengthen our engine room this summer, with Eddie Howe also preferring options with Premier League experience. Mix that with Everton’s financial struggles and the likelihood of a fire-sale should they go down, it’s easy to see why the Belgium international appeals.
Here’s what Tavolieri told us when asked if a move to Tyneside could be on the cards:
“Yes, why not, he loves the project.
“For the moment, Newcastle considers Onana as an opportunity.
“Their interest could become more concrete this summer, as the player decided in January to stay until the end of the season.”
