EXCLUSIVE: Relegation-threatened trio on NUFC’s radar as Toon eye Leeds, Everton & Forest stars

Last month, we released an exclusive with Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who told us that Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is on Newcastle’s radar and attracted by the project at St James’ Park.

Since then, we’ve been informed that two other relegation-threatened talents are also being watched by the club – Leeds winger Wilfried Gnonto and Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson.

The club are keeping a close eye on the fight for survival, aware of the fact several capable Premier League players will be available – potentially on the cheap – as Leeds, Forest, Everton and Leicester all battle to beat the drop.

Onana is a player our recruitment team have watched since his time with Lille, where he played alongside Sven Botman. Gnonto and Johnson could also be handy additions to the squad, which will have to balance Europe, cup competitions and another Premier League campaign in 2023/24.

Gnonto has seen a surprise dip in game time since Javi Gracia arrived at Elland Road, but the 19-year-old has huge potential and can play down either flank. Johnson’s pace and versatility may also appeal. The 21-year-old Welshman has 10 goals in all competitions this season, can play out wide or up top and is another who’s shown real promise in his debut season in the top flight.

As for Onana – another 21-year-old – his size, athleticism and explosiveness could add more firepower and presence to our midfield. Should Everton go down, he could be a real one to watch in our search for a new number six.

Top quality signings will be pursued this summer, but cherry-picking players at the other end of the table could also be a smart strategy. After all, we’re going to need a big squad and two good options in every position to compete on several fronts next season.

  1. Onana is a good player with a lot of potential. Brennan Johnson is another young player with a bright future, who can play wide or as a striker. Gnonto, although a talented player is a raw version of ASM, why would we sell Maxi to buy him?
