EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle want cut-price deal for key target and Man City discussing part-exchange

Newcastle United are keen to bring Kieran Tierney to St James’ Park this summer, but his injury history has left Eddie Howe pushing for a cut-price deal.

Speaking exclusively to NUFC Blog, Football Transfers correspondent Steve Kay has confirmed that the Toon boss is a big fan of the Scottish international, revealing that he tried to sign the 25-year-old during his time at Bournemouth.

However, his injury record is a concern, leaving us reluctant to match Arsenal’s £35m asking price at present. He remains a key target, but a compromise may be needed if he’s to arrive on Tyneside.

Interestingly, Steve also tells us that Man City have shown interest in their search for another left-back. Arsenal have made enquiries over Joao Cancelo, proposing Tierney plus cash for the Portuguese international who was loaned to Bayern Munich back in January.

Here’s what Steve told us, explaining where things stand in our pursuit of the former Celtic star:

“Arsenal want £35m for Tierney, but Newcastle are pushing for a cut-price deal as Eddie Howe is wary of his injury record.

“There’s a big chance he leaves this summer, although Arsenal are likely to sign a replacement before sanctioning his sale. He’s not getting the first-team football he wants and didn’t start in last weekend’s defeat to Nottingham Forest despite Zinchenko missing out.

“Man City are also in the market for a left-back and have shown interest in Tierney over the past two transfer windows. Conversations have taken place over a potential part-exchange, as Arsenal are eyeing up Joao Cancelo ahead of his return from a loan spell with Bayern Munich.

“Newcastle are certainly keen and Howe is a big fan – he tried to sign him during his time at Bournemouth – but he doesn’t want to overpay due to those fitness concerns.
