Sky Sports: Newcastle in talks over £60m deal – Howe set to pick between TWO exciting options?

An ‘update’ on Newcastle’s interest in RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai has emerged from Sky Sports in Germany.

It’s reported that talks have taken place between his agent and Newcastle. They even add that we are in a position to pay his £60m release clause and match his salary demands, stating the financial side of this deal would ‘not be a problem.’

HOWEVER, Sky Germany say we remain very interested in Leicester City’s James Maddison, insisting that any move for the Foxes star would ‘kill’ a move for Szoboszlai. So it’s very much one or the other.

This is not surprise, as both are attacking midfielders able to cut in from the right or operate as a number 10, not to mention the fact they’d both be expensive.

With that in mind, it seems Eddie Howe may be facing decision time. It won’t be that simple, as we’ll be working out Maddion’s price tag, wade demands, where he wants to go and who we’d face as competition. Who knows, perhaps we’ve lined up Szoboszlai as a ‘plan B’ because we fear Maddison wants a move elsewhere?

Time will tell. Either way, the Hungarian would be one hell of a back-up option and equally exciting signing should we pursue him instead of the England international.

  1. From other reports – I’m sure it was Keith Downie but could be wrong – Maddison is keen on Spurs & would favour a move to the bright lights of the capital.

But whilst they don’t have a director of football or manager, I’m not sure how much business will be getting done.

If it is the case that Maddison favours London I wouldn’t be hanging round for him to make his mind up.

Make the enquiry, if he doesn’t seem keen then don’t make the offer and move straight on – I only want players who want to play for Newcastle.

  2. Much prefer Dominic .. hungry for success .. Maddison is overrated ., a spursy type signing ..ineffective in a team that was relegated

  3. Szobozlai vs Maddison. We’re spoilt if we get either to be honest. Stats wise, Szobozlai is a better passer of the ball, and very good at set pieces, he’s only 22 though with plenty of room for development. Maddison is only a fraction under the pass accuracy of Szobozlai, but has scored more goals and registered more assists, he is 26 and coming into his prime.
Maddison also has Premier league experience which is always handy in the ‘toughest’ league in world football.
If Maddison prefers the idea of playing for Tottenham, who have no manager, DoF and may lose Kane then fair enough. Newcastle mauled Tottenham twice this season, and we will only get stronger season on season. I know who I’d rather play for!
