Eddie Howe robbed – Tuesday night announcement leaves Toon fans baffled

Eddie Howe has been robbed of the Premier League Manager of the Season award as it was announced on Tuesday night that Pep Guardiola has pipped him to the prize.

While the Spanish head coach has had an impressive season and could be on to win a treble, they were second best to Arsenal for the majority of the season, with a late collapse from the Gunners opening the door.

Considering he has also added Erling Haaland to what was already a title winning squad, it makes a mockery of the award to ignore those who’ve punched well above their weight.

There are a number of managers who could have come before him – Howe, Frank, Arteta, De Zerbi, O’Neil – who have all over performed with the resources they were given.

But Howe’s case in particular Is a strong one – taking a team who looked destined for relegation to the Champions League in just 18 months is no easy feat, and he has done so with a number of players who were already here pre-takeover.

No side lost less than us. No side conceded less than us. Not to mention all those Howe has improved, such as Schar, Longstaff, Joelinton and Almiron. Over 50% of our starting XI fighting in a relegation battle last year, making our achievement incredible and silencing those who claim we’ve bought our way to success.

It begs the question what more do the Premier League want Howe to have done in order to win the award? There is surely no other manager who has defied the odds like he has.

  2. Don’t get me wrong I think Eddie Howe has been fantastic and he hasn’t got the squad depth of Pep, Arteta or Ten Haag.
However Man City are in with a chance of a magnificent treble which in today’s competitive arena where the number of matches they have had to play to get to this position and at the same time overhaul Arsenal who had a good lead is magnificent management.
Plus like Eddie Howe Pep knows how to conduct himself unlike the others mentioned.
So in my opinion he wasn’t robbed, he finished just behind a magnificent manager.

  3. Joseph – I know, it’s almost like you’d have to break the rules to get anywhere near a treble in modern day football 🤔.

Taking nothing away from Pep as an individual, I think the guy is sensational & if not Howe then it had to be him. I’m not ‘baffled’ by it at all – but I am baffled at how a club can breach FFP over a decade & STILL nothing has been done about it.

Meanwhile teams who haven’t lose out on PL titles – and I don’t even like Arsenal or Liverpool.

  5. If Man City get the treble then yes Pep should get the accolade if not the I believe Eddie should have got it with FFP and the pressure he has been under

Agree with both of your points.
Unfortunately Man City and the the others got in way before ffp became such a bid issue and now have revenue streams that we will have to wait and build patiently for, of course we not only have the toxic six as they stand but we also had the Greedy Mike Ashley handicap to contend with over a 12 year period.
