Alan Shearer names Toon trio in Team of Season alongside Arsenal, Man City & Man Utd stars

Alan Shearer has named Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier in his Premier League Team of the Season, with Eddie Howe selected as his Manager of the Season.

Pope and Trippier showed superb consistency over the campaign, helping us boast the joint best defence in the division. With 33 goals conceded in 38 games, only Man City could match us in that department.

Our No 1 made a string of huge stops, kept 14 clean sheets – only David De Gea kept more – and Trippier was superb at both ends of the pitch, being a leader, warrior and chief creator from open play and set pieces.

As for Eddie Howe, Pep Guardiola may have pipped him to the official award, but he’s a worthy winner in Shearer’s end-of-season picks. No team lost less (5), he helped transform us from relegation battlers to top-four contenders and improved so many pre-takeover players, with the likes of Schar, Longstaff, Joelinton and Almiron playing key roles in our Champions League push.

Here’s Shearer’s team in full, featuring Man City’s Erling Haaland – one of four City players selected – Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and William Saliba:
