Source close to James Maddison reveals stance on Newcastle move as Leicester tell Spurs their price

It sounds like James Maddison might fancy a summer move to Newcastle United.

According to The Telegraph, a source close to the Leicester City star has revealed that he’s ‘tempted by the idea’ of joining Eddie Howe’s exciting new project at St James’ Park.

The same piece highlights that he’s ‘previously indicated his desire’ to join a London club – a promising sign for Spurs. However, they will not be able to offer the 26-year-old Champions League football or any European football whatsoever after finishing the 2022/23 season in 8th.

This may play a key role, especially when he’s keen to take his career to the next level and experience the highest level of European football.

The Telegraph also report on Leicester’s price tag. They are notoriously tough sellers and look set to demand in excess of £50m after Spurs signalled their intent to launch an opening offer – a hefty fee now he’s entering the final 12 months of his contract.

It remains to be seen who’ll win the bidding war between Spurs and Newcastle, with new boss Ange Postecoglou also a big fan, but it sounds like we might just have an advantage on the North London side following our contrasting ends to the season.

  1. If Maddison prefers London his heart isn’t in it as far as we are concerned, unfortunately one to swerve.
Plus Leicester are greedy negotiators even for a player with one year left on contract.

  2. The richest club in the world and CL football or the tightest club in the PL? Tough choice

  3. Big Mal: The richest club in the world and CL football or the tightest club in the PL? Tough choice

The club being built on Saudi blood money, or one that operates within the rules?

  4. There aren’t many players on the UK market at the moment that are of Maddison’s calibre for less than £40-£50 million pay the money Levy you’re doing it again!!!!
Forgive me if my figures are slightly out but we tracked Trossard and offered something like £13M Arsenal go in at £25M and his assists are every game??? No more stalling Levy!!!!

It doesn’t matter. Tottenham have got lots to pay for and no CL football to bring the money in this season. Levy can’t afford to have Maddison unless he sells Kane. Even then, Newcastle will offer a good package, adoring fans and above all CL football.

  6. We have plenty of money, don’t need to sell Kane, unless he really wants to go , but Levy won’t pay what he considers overpriced players, same as Newcastle did before the oil money came in. I’d love Maddison, he is the midfielder we need . Expect Lfc,cfc, Afc, Manchester clubs to spend heavily, along with Newcastle and maybe even Levy might spend on the right players the manager wants (i won’t hold my breath ) then you will see a battle for top four, not like this season where we were terrible throughout the season along with Cfc, and Liverpool making a late charge. The transfer window will be a record high spend.
Top four is going to be some battle, hope we’re in it.

  7. “They are notoriously tough sellers”

That might have been the case when they were a prem lge club but they have had financial issues for a while now and need to sell not just him but others.
As for their financial strife they’re in a league now that are stricter on breaches of FFP plus I’m certain the majority of players at any club have relegation clauses in their contracts as a matter of fact these days
So a few points as to why this might not be as expensive as people think before you are in the fact he has only 12 months left on his contract.
